Vincenzo Paolino, RN, MSc Management of Health Care Organizations, BSc Psychology, BSc General Management and Management of NPOs (*1965 in Munich) is a certified specialist in geriatric care equipped with entrepreneurial spirit. He has a background in care management as well as business economy. Extended leadership experience and continued education enable him to lead companies in the field of long-term care with sustained success. He serves as the Treasurer for the Global Ageing Network. After studying psychology from 1986 to 1988 in Munich he chooses to complete an apprenticeship in psychiatric nursing in Switzerland and graduated in 1991. His thesis was on “New approaches in Long Term Care for elders”. Working as nursing director in a hospice for Aids-patients in the 1990’s gave him the opportunity to develop management skills as well as helping to spread palliative care-ideas.  This was followed by 13 years as nursing director in a state-owned nursing home near Zurich where he and his staff successfully implemented elements of the Eden-Alternative to boost culture-change. He successfully introduced “Almacasa” as an alternative to usual nursing homes in Switzerland.He serves as the founder and board member for the non-for-profit association “queerAltern” and former President, he and his team strive for an affordable place to live for frail LGBTs in Zurich. Within this challenge he benefits from his experience in elder care as much as from belonging to the gay community.

Blake Pearson, M.D. is a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and a board-certified family physician in the U.S. He is a practicing family physician who has focused his practice on cannabinoid medicine and has treated thousands of patients with range of complex conditions. Most recently, he has been specializing in cannabinoid therapies in long-term care settings, with a focus on improved end-of-life and palliative care.

Dr. Pearson is also a passionate educator and spends much of his free time training and educating policymakers, organizations and fellow medical professionals around the world, through his educational company, Greenly Medical Consulting (GreenlyMed.com), where he serves as President and Chief Medical Advisor.

Freda holds Canadian Nurses’ Association specialty certification in gerontological nursing, certification in Teaching and Training Adults from Georgian College and the Advanced Palliative Care Education Program. She also volunteers as a nurse on transcultural expeditions to the Dominican Republic.

Dr. Al Power is a Geriatrician and Schlegel Chair in Aging and Dementia Innovation at the Research Institute for Aging. Al is an international educator on transformational models of care for older adults, particularly those living with dementia. He has published two books, Dementia Beyond Drugs and Dementia Beyond Disease. He has advised the US government in their antipsychotic reduction initiatives, and was named one of “Five Leaders of Tomorrow” by Long-Term Living Magazine, 2013.

Sheila Rix received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Prince Edward Island. During her nursing career she has worked in both acute and long term care settings, a RN supervisor at Prince Edward Home and a Clinical Resource Nurse at Beach Grove Home, two of the largest nursing homes on PEI. Additionally, she recently obtained her CNA certification in Gerontology.

Sheila strongly believes in a person centered approach and strives to ensure nursing care follows the best clinical practice standards. In her various duties she has served important roles in key domains, such as promotion of bilingual care capacity, enhancements to dementia care training and key leadership support to the Appropriate Use of Antipsychotic Medication project. Throughout these and other initiatives, the focus has been on expanding the range of possibilities in the pursuit of improved quality of life for residents. She recently joined Health PEI team as Provincial Long Term Care Practice Coordinator and assumed the role as the AUA Provincial lead.

As the AUA Provincial lead, Sheila brings her knowledge and expertise to all 9 long term care facilities to reduce the inappropriate use of Antipsychotics and improve the quality of life for seniors living care homes.

Natalie is an Interior Design Educator at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. Her area of specialty is healthcare design, with a research focus on the future of Alzheimer’s care facilities, participatory programming, human centric design, the design process and the future of the built environment. Her research examines non-family caregiver perspectives about current and future Alzheimer’s care facilities in London, Ontario. Additionally she works with other researchers, interior designers and architects exploring alternative methodologies to approaching design for the future.
